Priceless!

One pair of glasses...
$90

One red book light...
$10

One bribe given to a child if she would just please
STOP READING and GO TO SLEEP...
$5

One book report book about being young and afraid during World War II...
$20

Spending an afternoon with Great-Great Aunt Jyette,
visiting from Denmark...
Who embraced my children and told them what it was really like to be 15 years old and afraid during World War II...
and with detail and feelings that they could never
get from a book...

PRICELESS!

Thank you Aunt Jyette
for being the bind that ties generations together.

Spending time with you
reminded me just how much
I miss and love my Grandparents
who made the heart wrenching decision
to leave loving parents, brothers and
sisters like you,
to come to America
so that I could have a life
overflowing with the of gospel of Jesus Christ.
I love you!

Happy Anniversary!

Jimmy and I officially became
The Hunter's!

To celebrate this enormous occasion,
we went out on Friday night!
Our big Anniversary date
went like this...

First
we discussed if we should get 'dressed-up' or not.
We went a little crazy and
voted for 'dressed-up'
which meant
clean jeans, a clean shirt,
brushed hair and make-up!
(Ooohh fancy!)

But secretly
I was hoping
that he would have choosen
'not dressed-up'
which would have been
my daily uniform of
sweats, a ponytail and flip flops.
I always prefer
a stretchy waistband when food is involved.
Yet another sacrifice for love!

Then,
we discussed what time we should leave.
Since it had been a busy week and
we were already tired,
we really wanted to get an early start
so that we wouldn't be up too late.
BUT
 at the same time,
we also didn't want to come home too early
because then we would have to put the kids to bed!
Oh no, no, no!

This is the entire point of having a sitter, right?
For you see,
while some believe that sitter's are hired to keep the kids safe,
I believe they are paid to endure bed time so that I don't have to!

We left at five!

Our first stop was...
COSTCO!
Yeah, that's right!
Is there anything more fun
than cruising around Costco
without kids and without an agenda?
NO!

First, we walked around the electronics...
It just never gets old
to hear Jimmy "Dude" it up
about how cheap TVs are now compared to a year ago!
(FYI - that was sarcasm...it actually gets really old!)
Then, we looked at vacuums, paper cutters, tools,
outdoor furniture, clothes, books,
 pool supplies and wireless keyboards.
Before we left we bought
kitchen garbage bags and a blow dryer.
(I think that was the first time I've left Costco
without spending at least $100.00)

Next was dinner.
We went to a yummy steak house
because
our love grows stronger with red meat!
We ate yummy food and were having a great time
until we hit our perverbial walls.
Even though our eyelids were starting to burn
and our speech was getting a little slurred,
we were determined to stay out past bedtime!

It also didn't help that
Jim couldn't hear a word I was saying
because he had a bad ear infection
and I kept grabbing my left kidney
because of a neglected bladder infection!
Our dinner conversation consisted of...
"Ouch!"
"What?"
"I said Ouch!"
"What?"
"I said Ouch!"
"What?  Why?"
"My kidney hurts!"
"What?"
"My kidney hurts and I'm afraid to go to the bathroom!"
"What?"
"I said...oh, never mind!"
"What?"
"OK!  I said, let's have more kids!"
"Oh, I think I just threw up a little in my mouth!"
"See, I knew you could hear!"
"What?"

Yeah!
We were going downhill fast.
But it was ONLY 7:30...
still way too early to go home!

So, we took our doggy bag
and headed for our next favorite stop...
THE HOME DEPOT!
For the next hour and a half,
we looked at Formica, deep freezers, carpet,
washing machines, lighting fixtures, cabinetry and tile.
Although it was heavenly to
freely roam around the store,
it was also an
endurance test, of sorts,
because we were both so painfully tired!

By 9:00
we decided that we might literally die
if we didn't get to bed
so we headed for home.

9:00!?!
13 years ago we would have just been meeting to go out!
Now, we are a couple of old farts
with clogged ears and swollen kidneys
who are forcing ourselves to stay awake
so that we don't have to put our kids to bed!
How funny is that!

As we drove home,
we held hands
and planned out our schedule
for the next week!

When we got home,
Lulu was fast asleep
but the other's were still awake!
Oh have mercy!
But,
it was impossible to be disappointed because
they were all so happy to see us!
It was as if we had been gone for years!

So, while Jimmy took the sitter home,
I shooed everyone off to bed
then
fell fast asleep
on the couch
before he even got home!

In my opinion,
our anniversary date was a
TOTAL SUCCESS!

Check us out Jimmy...
We're fully getting old together!
How cool is that?

Here's to 13 gazillion more years of delicious torment!
I LOVE YOU!
Happy Anniversary!

Mom!

When Abraham Lincoln said,
"All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother"
he was not kidding!

I don't care what age I am
or what stage of life I am in,
I need my Mom.

She is safe!
She is secure!
She is home!

After all,
Mom is one of the only people
on this entire planet
who shares my story.

Not only has she known every happiness
and every heartbreak
that I have ever experienced,
but she has FELT them
right along with me.
(Now that I'm a Mom, I understand that!)

I am a product of a loving Mom
who encourages me to try new things,
loves me regardless of my flaws,
and
believes that I can accomplish
anything that I set my mind too.

Now I see this same love
flowing over into her grandchildren.
She teaches them!
She lives vicariously through them!
She loves them...
and they love her!

and

Mom always knows exactly how
to love a 3 year old redhead
when everyone else
has lost their patience.

A true saint!
Thank you Mom
for being so wonderful.
I love you!

Happy Mother's Day!

My older sister Laura
is good at everything.
Yeah!  It's true.
everything...even math!

When I was an awkward teenager
one of my friends asked if it was HARD being Laura's little sister.
Uhm.  Hard?
I had never looked at it that way before!
Usually people asked if I LOVED being Laura's sister
or if it was FUN being her little sister.
Nobody had ever asked me if it was hard.

So for a few days,
I soul searched.
and
I compared myself to her.
Of course, that did not go so well
because, as usual, I compared all of
my weaknesses to her strengths.

My list went something like this...

She could drive - I couldn't!
(I wasn't even OLD enough to drive yet)

She was always surrounded by cute boys -
I was taller than all of the cute boys!
(They didn't grow until years later!)

When she got dressed, she looked like Madonna -
When I got dressed, I looked like a really big Punky Brewster!
(That just never got better!)

She had blond hair - I had red!
(HA! Now we both color our hair!)

She was a model - My mom encouraged me to be a plus-size model!
(Well...)

She would sunbath - I would do cannon balls!
(That will never change!)

So there!
It was true!
Laura was Princess Di and I was Fergie!
She was #1...
elegant, poised and loved by all.
While I was #2...
awkward, irreverent and on Weight Watchers!

I decided that my friend was right!
It was HARD being Laura's sister!
Not cool or fun - just hard!

So, where complete sisterly love and adoration had always resided,
I let jealousy creep into my heart,
 as a dark guest!

For days, I was angry and resented all of her coolness.
I looked for ways that I was better
and tried to be different than her.
I was bitter and mean!

Then,
on Thursday evening
she asked if I wanted to go shopping with her at the mall.
Just me and her!

I sat in the front seat of her Toyota.
She bought me a cookie at Paradise Bakery.
We shopped in Contempo Casuals.
She bought me a pair of black stir-up pants and a pink JAG sweatshirt.
She was happy and kind and fun!

As we rode down the escalator,
I remember looking around and thinking
"I bet everyone thinks I'm cool because I'm with
HER!"

Right then and there
I kicked jealousy to the curb!
Good-bye forever
I vowed!

From that moment on,
I can honestly say that I have never been jealous of Laura.
What was I thinking?
I cannot even begin
to explain all of the perks
to having such a great sister!
I am always learning something new!

In fact, just a few weeks ago
I went to Utah to visit her and my other sister Amy!
As a surprise, they brought my
dear, dear, dearest friend
DAWN!

We had such a great time!
As Dawn was about to leave,
I asked Amy to take a picture of the two of us.
Aren't we cute?

Then
Laura got super excited!
She took the camera from Amy and
while we sat on the couch,
she stood in front of us and raised the camera over her head
as far as she could reach.
Confused,
Dawn and I looked up?
Laura assured us
that this was her new favorite way
to take pictures
because they always turn out so cool!

I did not doubt her in the least!
Since my high school experience,
I have learned to completely trust Laura's methods.
I knew it would be cool and
 I thought FOR SURE
it would eliminate any chance of a double chin!

As Dawn and I smiled
Amy was skeptical of Laura's new found technique.
But, Laura insisted on taking the picture of us
from the ceiling!

CLICK!

Yep!  Just as I thought...
no double chins!

Amy laughed.
Laura was disappointed!

I decided that the problem was not with her technique
but that Laura just wasn't high enough.
So, since I'm taller,
I tried the new method.

First on Laura...

then on Amy...

then on Dawn!

See, aren't these the best pictures you've ever seen?
I told you Laura was good at everything!
(well almost everything!)

All I can say is ...
if this is what my friend meant by HARD
than I hope it NEVER gets easy!

Missed fortune!

As a reward
for doing well at the dentist,
I took Seth and Lulu to
Panda Express.

We love Panda Express!
Orange Chicken...Ooooh!
Sweet and Sour Pork...Yum!
Mandarin Chicken...Aaaah!

Yeah!  Yeah!
The food is good,
but what really makes the Panda experience
so desirable are their
FORTUNE COOKIES!

It's true!

What is it with me and fortune cookies?
I love them!
I secretly
(well not so secretly anymore)
yearn for them to be a direct link to my future.
They are,
in my opinion,
a perfect combination of
junk food and fantasy!
I ask,
is there anything better than
a little hope wrapped in sugar?

No, there is not!

Maybe I love them so much because
they are always positive!
Think about it.
Have you ever opened a negative fortune cookie?
Could you imagine?
Cracking open your cookie
and finding...

"YES CHUBS!
THOSE JEANS MAKE YOU LOOK FAT!"
or
"BRACE YOURSELF BUDDY!
YOU'RE ABOUT TO LOOSE IT ALL!"
or
"YOU'RE UGLY AND YOUR FEET SMELL!"

It would be devastating!

Fortune cookies are meant to be
HOPEFUL and HAPPY
and
ALWAYS COME TRUE!
that's my philosophy anyway.

So, when fortune cookie
time came with Seth and Lulu,
I followed proper fortune protocol
and let each of them choose their own cookie.

Heaven forbid
that someone else
choose your cookie for you.
I am a firm believer
that the cosmos will lead you
to the proper cookie!
Just like how you are led to the right spouse or career...
I believe that you too are led to the right cookie!
You must choose your own!

Lulu chose first.
She cracked it open
and fished out the paper heart.
I read it to her.

"YOU CREATE ENTHUSIASM
WHEREVER YOU GO!"

Oh, hello!
Could that be more accurate, or what?
Come on...
Lulu TOTALLY creates enthusiasm
 wherever she goes.
Either
people are super enthusiastic to see her come
or
people are super enthusiastic to see her go!
That one was definitely meant for her.

We high-fived!

Then it was Seth's turn.
With only 2 cookies to choose from
 he did not hesitate
and went straight for the one on the right.

He snapped open the shell and pulled out the paper.
After studying it for a few seconds,
he handed it to me.
(I think he suddenly remembered
that he could only read
 in Spanish!)

With his eyes fixed on me
I read him his fortune...

"SUCCESS AND WEALTH
ARE IN YOUR FUTURE"

Oooh Sethie!
What could that possibly mean?
I was so excited for him.
SUCCESS and WEALTH?
He got a 2FER
(2 fortunes in one cookie!)
That was amazing!
but
He could've cared less.

Finally, it was my turn.
Oh, what would it be?
Success?  Money?  Fame?
I swear,
half of the excitement is in the wondering!

With anticipation mounting,
I slide the cookie out of the plastic wrapper
and broke it open
 only to find
that

it was empty!

That's right, you heard me!
My fortune cookie was empty.
E-M-P-T-Y!
No fortune...just cookie!

WHAT?!?
Words cannot express
my utter disappointment.

That had never happened to me before in my life.

So as I sat there
fortune-less and hopeless
in the Panda Express,
I took matters into my own hands
and combined my kids fortunes to make
one for me.

it went like this...

YOU CREATE ENTHUSIASM
WHEREEVER YOU GO
because
SUCCESS AND WEALTH ARE IN YOUR FUTURE!

See...problem solved.
No fortune cookie
 can keep me down!!!
but hopefully I will have
BETTER LUCK
 next time!
